One of this year’s top highlights has definitely got to be being named The Billfish Foundation’s 2024 “Artist of the Year”. This prestigious accolade was a thrilling culmination of my deep connection with the foundation and my passion for marine life. The opportunity arose after working closely with the foundation to support their year-end Gala and fundraiser, a key event dedicated to promoting the conservation of billfish species worldwide.
For the Gala, I provided one of the very first editions of my newest sailfish painting titled “Blue Water Sail” for the live auction. This piece was more than just a painting; it was a symbol of my commitment to the cause. The auction successfully raised substantial funds, contributing to efforts ensuring a better future for all species of Billfish and the sport of Billfishing itself. Knowing that my artwork played a role in supporting these conservation efforts is immensely gratifying.
To commemorate this significant occasion, I dedicated myself to creating another masterpiece titled “Lift Off” specifically for the foundation. The idea of capturing the essence and vitality of a sailfish in motion was both exhilarating and challenging. I knew I wanted this artwork to be special, but I wasn’t exactly sure where to start and how I wanted to portray such an important piece. This led to numerous mock-ups and sketches, each iteration bringing me closer to the vision I had in mind. After much contemplation and creative exploration, I finally achieved the look and feel I was striving for, and I’m thrilled with the result.
“Lift Off” is now available in limited quantities to sponsors and new enrollees and can also be found on The Billfish Foundation website. This piece holds a special place in my heart, not only because of its subject matter but also because of the meaningful collaboration it represents.
Being chosen as the Artist of the Year by such a respected and important organization is an incredible honor. It validates my dedication to marine art and conservation, and it motivates me to continue pushing the boundaries of my craft. The recognition extended beyond the Gala; I was featured on the cover of Billfish Magazine, accompanied by a full-page write-up detailing our collaboration. Seeing my work highlighted in such a prominent publication was a surreal and proud moment.
Reflecting on this journey, I am filled with gratitude and excitement for the future. This experience has not only enriched my artistic career but also deepened my commitment to the conservation of marine life. I look forward to creating more pieces that inspire and contribute to the preservation of our oceans and the magnificent creatures that inhabit them.
